Modified Wenzel and Cassie Equations for Wetting on Rough Surfaces
نویسنده
چکیده
We study a stationary wetting problem on rough and inhomogeneous solid surfaces. We derive a new formula for the apparent contact angle by asymptotic two-scale homogenization method. The formula is reduced to a modified Wenzel equation for geometrically rough surfaces and a modified Cassie equation for chemically inhomogeneous surfaces. Unlike the classical Wenzel and Cassie equations, the modified equations correspond to local minimizers of the total interface energy in the solid-liquid-air system, so that they are consistent with experimental observations. The homogenization results are proved rigorously by a variational method.

Cassie-Wenzel wetting transition in vibrating drops deposited on rough surfaces: is the dynamic Cassie-Wenzel wetting transition a 2D or 1D affair?
The transition between the Cassie and Wenzel wetting regimes has been observed under vertical vibration of a water drop placed on a rough micrometrically scaled polymer pattern. The transition takes place under the constant force per unit length of the triple contact line, not under constant pressure. A study of the vibrating drop deposited on the rough surface supplied valuable information con...

Preliminary results of a research on the effects of microstructure and surface roughness of a hypoeutectic cast iron on its wetting angle are presented in this article. For this purpose, molten cast iron was solidified at different cooling rates to produce two samples of the same composition, i.e. a gray cast iron with A type flake graphite and a white cast iron. Two samples were then prepared ...
متن کاملWetting Transition of the Ethanol−Water Droplet on Smooth and Textured Surfaces
The wetting behavior of an ethanol−water droplet is investigated on graphitic smooth and rough surfaces using molecular dynamics simulations. On a smooth surface, ethanol molecules prefer to stay at the vapor−liquid and solid− liquid interfaces. The contact angle of a droplet on a smooth surface decreases with an increase in the ethanol concentration from 0 to 30 wt %. The corresponding line te...
متن کاملInfluence of geometric patterns of microstructured superhydrophobic surfaces on water-harvesting performance via dewing.
On superhydrophobic (SHPo) surfaces, either of two wetting states-the Cassie state (i.e., nonwetted state) and the Wenzel state (i.e., wetted state)-can be observed depending on the thermodynamic energy of each state and external conditions. Each wetting state leads to quite a distinctive dynamic characteristic of the water drop on SHPo surfaces, and it has been of primary interest to understan...
متن کاملModeling the Effects of Nanopatterned Surfaces on Wetting States of Droplets
An analytic thermodynamic model has been established to quantitatively investigate the wetting states of droplets on nanopatterned surfaces. Based on the calculations for the free energies of droplets with the Wenzel state and the Cassie-Baxter state, it is found that the size and shape of nanostructured surfaces play crucial roles in wetting states. In detail, for nanohole-patterned surfaces, ...
